Minimum – Maximum – The New Audi Nuvolari

Just ahead of the Grand Prix de Monaco, the Audi Nuvolari was unveiled in Antibes – a sculptural Space Frame carbon machine, limited to 499 units, producing 1,001 hp, powered by a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and three axial-flux electric motors. 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 s, top speed 218 mph, dry weight under 1,750 kg. The combustion engine delivers a maximum torque of 730 Nm and reaches up to 10,000 rpm – a range previously reserved almost exclusively for motorsport. The most powerful sports car in Audi's history – named after Tazio Giorgio Nuvolari (1892–1953), the "Flying Mantuan", blessed with legendary courage and described by Ferdinand Porsche as the greatest racing driver of all time. His trademark: he always wore a yellow sweater.

  • In 405 days, Audi achieved the unthinkable and put a supercar on the road – no concept study, needless to say. German Autobahn beats China Speed. How does this happen in good old Germany? The principle of clarity, championed by Massimo Frascella and Gernot Döllner, has reshaped Audi's structures from within. A dedicated space was created inside the company – rooted in Design – everything restructured and optimally aligned. Döllner describes the process as »Highspeed Interaction – Transforming with Speed. The Nuvolari shows what we are capable of.«

At the forefront: Massimo Frascella – with courage, composure and a razor-sharp eye; dissecting every surface, driving the design philosophy forward and distilling it. "Every design decision follows a clear intention. Our new identity finds its expression in the Vertical Frame, used here for the first time in a hybrid model, shaping the functional logic of the car. Clarity and control define the interior. Everything is focused on driving." Not a single day in the studio passes without optimisation – "Can't be done" isn't in the vocabulary. »Never before had we sat together in person every single day to refine the product. We didn't leave the studio in the evening until we had a solution«, says one insider. The process demanded everything from all involved – an internationally assembled team of young talents and seasoned veterans. What unites and motivates them all: a passion for sports cars and the drive to put together the best possible team. Starting with 15 people, they grew to several hundred. The motivation: the Nuvolari gets better every day. It ages well. Gernot Döllner visits as often as he can, takes pride in what he sees and leads the team with confidence: "I'll clear the path to get this on the road – the Nuvolari is now truly important for Audi."

  • Unlike other manufacturers, Ingolstadt resolutely stays the course of "radical simplicity". The EV and the hybrid – Concept C and Nuvolari – are cut from the same cloth; a balancing act that works. The Nuvolari is the big brother of the Concept C. Clad in carbon, the car looks as though it has been milled from a single block of aluminium. No frills, no fuss, no bullshit. Instead: design from the centrifuge of a new, self-assured Ingolstadt – everything in its place, at its finest in terms of materiality. Minimum is Maximum is Minimum. Technically, the new Audi is also exceptionally capable, according to Rouven Mohr, Board Member for Technical Development: "The Nuvolari is Audi's first supercar with a high-performance hybrid drivetrain and sets new benchmarks with its aerodynamics and the world-first quattro predictive ride."

Technically, there is a long list of innovations – but to us, the Nuvolari is no ordinary supercar. It is an avant-garde, monolithic sculpture, or even a piece of moving architecture: the generous surfaces, the graphic language and even the panel gaps together form the complete design statement. The finish and the colours – such as the signature communication colour Titanium, also used in Formula 1 – are treated with the utmost care: anodised finishes, brushed aluminium, components milled from solid billet – an ode to the art of manufacturing. In the Concept C, we referenced Giorgio Armani and Jil Sander for the interior, evoking a Zen garden – the Nuvolari goes even further. A modern, minimalist, geometric seating landscape in Shadow Dune – »The back of the dunes«, what a beautiful reference – and Muted Black await the driver. Inside, everything is uncompromisingly focused on driving. The proportions and harmony of materials feel perfect. A clarity prevails that is rarely found in an age of ever more meaningless and arbitrary digital excess – tactility, the click of a switch, the snap of a control. When you turn the ignition key, everything else becomes irrelevant … V8, 10,000 rpm …

  • The most compelling question is: who is the Audi Nuvolari for? The era of Nürburgring lap records may soon be over – many manufacturers now offer 1,000 hp, and everyone is fast. So what's next? In our view, this car has carved out an entirely new space in the supercar matrix. It is a holistic object – an embodiment of technical sensuality rooted in German design history. It is uniquely "tailored" here – much like the Lamborghini Countach LP 400 once was, from the pen of Marcello Gandini. It is for the aficionados among sports car collectors, a high-performance Gentleman's Racer – for those who, alongside performance and speed, have a deep appreciation for art, architecture and design history. It is not merely a new child of our culture – our greatest asset – it signals a new German self-confidence. With the Nuvolari, Audi will claim its place as the true avant-gardist …
