In 405 days, Audi achieved the unthinkable, putting a super sports car on the road in an astonishingly short amount of time. German Autobahn Speed. The principle of clarity championed by Massimo Frascella and Gernot Döllner reaches deep into Audi’s structures – everything was rethought internally, reorganized and optimally aligned. Gernot Döllner describes the process as: “Highspeed Interaction – Transforming with Speed. The Nuvolari shows what we are capable of.”
Tick, tock. 405 days. A look behind the scenes reveals the immense momentum of this perfectly orchestrated clockwork. Every day a quantum leap, no room for error, total concentration, absolute passion. Despite the enormous time pressure, craftsmanship remains paramount. Elaborate clay models take shape, full-scale milling machines are running, computer renderings are generated – everything works hand in hand, as if the analogue and digital ages had merged into one. Digital and analogue – best friends forever.
In the shortest possible time, an avant-garde, monolithic driving machine takes shape. Generous surfaces, graphics and even the shut lines define the overall design – sculpted like a work of art. At the same time, in a parallel technical universe, Audi’s engineers are refining the intricacies of the machine. Rouven Mohr, Board Member for Technical Development, and his team are working on Quattro Reloaded – the Quattro Predictive Ride. The chassis: aluminium space frame meets carbon-fibre skin. The engine delivers more than 1,000 hp and sounds simply wonderful. The development prototype is already drifting through the snow.
Meanwhile, the interior celebrates Minimum Maximum. Next stop: the wind tunnel. Heat tests follow, and further trials call for a large rear wing. Massimo Frascella’s response: “Over my dead body.” Just a few days later, a solution committed to understatement is found to deliver the necessary downforce. And so it continues – at the speed of light, driven by a kind of curated pragmatism. Nardò, the high-speed proving ground, is calling. Gabriel Bortoleto gets out and has only one thing to say: “The car is sick.” In truth, he barely wants to get out at all – he would rather ride off into the sunset.
The optimization continues. Every meeting is charged with tension, emotions run high, yet the “level of attention to detail” remains unwavering. And then, finally, there it is: Nuvolari in Titanium. The premiere is a success. The Nuvolari makes its mark.
It is almost impossible to put this process into words. It was fascinating to witness just how strongly the spirit of the German automotive industry still beats – invisible to many, written off long ago, yet behind the scenes as alive as ever. With the Nuvolari, Audi has reclaimed its place at the forefront of the avant-garde.
